The 3rd GRINNAQUA workshop, on “Fish health and welfare in industrial aquaculture” will take place on the 24 to 26th of September, at CIIMAR (see on the map), in Matosinhos, Portugal

Those interested can choose to either participate in the theoretical session only, on the 24th of September, online, or on the full workshop, on 24 to 26th of September, in person.

Training team

Aina-Cathrine Øvergård

Associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen

Works at the Sea Lice Research center, with a focus on the host-parasite interaction of salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) and Atlantic salmon as a host. Her team identifies secretory proteins that are deposited from the lice onto the salmon to dampen immune responses.

Anita Rønneseth

Associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen

Her research is focused on fish immunology and diseases. Her team studied how B-cells and neutrophils in Atlantic salmon and cod help clear particles and how amoebic gill disease affects lumpfish and can transfer to salmon.

Egil Karlsbakk

Associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen

He is an expert in fish biology and pathology. His focuses on the impact of the gill parasite Paramoeba perurans on Atlantic salmon and the transmission of nervous necrosis virus between turbot and cod. They also explore how marine leeches transmit trypanosomes to Atlantic cod.

Tom Ole Nielsen

Associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen

His research is focused on Salmon and fish biology. His teams focuses on topics including gill function, size variation, hormone effects on spermatogenesis, and immune responses in fish. They have also explored key areas such as osmoregulation, growth, migration, neurogenesis, and retinal cell differentiation.

Frank Nielsen

Associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen

Frank and his team have made significant contributions to the study of Lepeophtheirus and salmon lice, focusing on aquaculture, genetics, disease management, and marine environmental studies.

Benjamín Costas

Principal Researcher at CIIMAR, University of Porto and Head of Aquatic Animal Health Team

His team’s main research is targeting novel strategies to improve fish disease resistance and welfare as well as on non-invasive biomarkers of animal health.

Keynote speakers

Andrés González Lecuona

Fish Welfare Manager at Stolt Sea Farm

Has been working in aquaculture since 2007 in flatfish, always linked to areas of Health and Animal Welfare, at Stolt Sea Farm since 2012 where he has held the position of Fish Welfare Manager at Stolt Sea Farm. He is part of the Animal Welfare working group at APROMAR (Business Association of Aquaculture in Spain). He has also been a member of the Aquaculture Industry at the College of Biologists of Galicia since 2021

Isidro Blanquet

Secretary General at the Portuguese Aquaculture Association (APA)

With nearly 30 years of experience in marine aquaculture, Isidro is an expert in broodstock management, fry production, hatchery techniques, and aquaculture engineering, including Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS). His extensive background includes roles as Hatchery Manager, Farm Manager, and Project Manager, working with species like sea bass, sea bream, turbot, and sole. Isidro has deep knowledge of Portugal’s aquaculture industry, including both intensive and semi-intensive production methods. Over his career, he has built strong relationships with governmental and academic institutions in the field.

João Saraiva

Head of the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at CCMar

João L. Saraiva graduated in Biology in 2000 by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, completed his MSc in Ethology in 2004 at ISPA-IU (Lisbon) and his PhD in Aquatic Sciences in 2009 at the University of Porto. He is an invited lecturer of Ethology at University of Algarve also in Portugal, Principal Investigator of the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at the Center of Marine Sciences in Faro and president of the Fish Etho Group Association. João’s main focus is in the application of ethological knowledge into the assessment and improvement of the welfare of aquatic animals. João authored nearly 100 scientific publications (including papers, reports and book chapters) and was editor of a book on fish welfare. He has also participated in several national and international projects throughout his career, both as researcher and as PI, from crustaceans to fish, from the tropics to Northern latitudes, from rivers to coral reefs and from intertidal to pelagic species. João works as a researcher in the areas of behaviour and welfare of aquatic animals in the wild, in farming and in fisheries, coordinates training programs in these areas and performs consultancy work for European Union official bodies (e.g. AAC, EFSA, European Commission and Parliament) as well as several international companies and institutions. João strongly believes that science can be the driver of change.

Renata Serradeiro

CEO at Flatlantic and Founder of RiaSearch

Renata Serradeiro brings extensive expertise in fish farm production, reproduction, innovation, and management from her roles at FLATLANTIC, RIASEARCH, SEA8, and AQUACRIA. With over 20 years in the aquaculture industry, she has held various management roles, including R&D, production, and general manager. Renata has expertise in designing and implementing RAS systems for marine fish and shrimp. In 2016, she founded Riasearch, where she applies her knowledge to fish larval rearing, grow-out, RAS technology, and the interplay of nutrition, stress, growth, and fish welfare.
