New milestone: Inês Carvalho defends PhD on methionine nutrition in fish

We are proud to share that Inês Carvalho, has successfully defended her PhD thesis: “Tailored methionine nutrition in fish: effects on immunity, oxidative stress and beyond.” This achievement marks a significant contribution to our mission of fostering innovation in sustainable aquaculture.

Inês’s work, partially funded by GRINNAQUA, explores how optimized methionine levels in fish diets can enhance immune function, reduce oxidative stress, and improve overall health. These findings are critical for developing more efficient and environmentally friendly aquaculture practices.

Her thesis was evaluated by a prestigious international jury, including experts from Portugal, Italy, and Norway:

  • Dr. Luísa Valente (President), from ICBAS, University of Porto, Portugal;
  • Dr. Alessio Bonaldo, from University of Bologna, Italy;
  • Dr. Carlo C. Lazado, from the Norwegian Institute of Food (Nofima), Norway;
  • Dr. Jorge Proença Dias, from SPAROS Lda. – Nutrition in Aquaculture, Portugal;
  • Dr. Irina Cruz, from ICBAS, University of Porto, Portugal.

Inês’s research was supervised by Dr. Benjamin Costas Refojos and Dr. Marina Machado, at CIIMAR.
