Workshop: Challenges and opportunities for a more competitive national aquaculture

On 21 May 2025, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in Algés hosted the workshop “Challenges and Opportunities for a More Competitive Aquaculture”, aimed at fostering strategic reflection on the future of the aquaculture sector in Portugal.
Organised within the scope of GRINNAQUA (Horizon Europe) and the AquaClimAdaptand MycoFish projects (funded by FCT), the event brought together leading national experts — including value chain actors, public authorities, policymakers and academics — to discuss both short- and long-term challenges and opportunities in the sector.
We proposed a discussion around four key areas with strong potential to drive the sustainable growth of aquaculture:

Under two opposite policy scenarios

- A liberal economy future
Participation in this event was by invitation only. The outcomes of the workshop will, nevertheless, be public, and available in both Portuguese and English.
