Position paper – On the discussion for welfare improvement in farmed fish. Recommendations from GRINNAQUA´s consortium.

Our team has released a comprehensive position paper “On the discussion for welfare improvement in farmed fish”, now available on Zenodo. The paper highlights the need for species-specific welfare guidelines tailored to different aquaculture systems, such as semi-intensive, intensive, and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), while emphasizing the importance of public education to address misconceptions and foster social acceptance of aquaculture’s role in global food security. It calls for the development of minimally invasive welfare assessment tools and advanced technologies like biosensors and AI to enhance monitoring and reduce stress during critical handling procedures. The paper also addresses challenges such as disease management, climate change impacts, and the potential of gene-edited organisms to improve resilience and welfare. Advocating for stronger collaboration between industry, academia, and governments, the team underscores the need for fair trade practices and consumer awareness to ensure high welfare standards across the EU and beyond.
